The Genealogy Of Jesus Found In The Gospel Of Luke

Luke 3:23-38: (New Revised Standard Version - "NRSV") - (The Ancestors Of Jesus) 23 Jesus was about thirty years old when He began His work. VERSE 23: "Jesus was about thirty years old when He began His work. He was the son (as was thought) of
Joseph son of Heli,"
Thirty Years Of Age: Luke alone notes Jesus' adult age, which the Jews generally considered the age of maturity. Earlier emphasis on Jesus' royal mission links Him with David (Luke 1:32 and Luke 2:4), who was also thirty when annointed king (see 2nd Samuel 5:4 on home page).
Luke 1:32: ("NRSV") He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give to Him the throne of His ancestor David.
Luke 2:4: ("NRSV") Joseph also went from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to the city of David called Bethlehem, because he was descended from the house and family of David.
VERSES 23-38: "See top of page."
There are several differences between the genealogies of Jesus in Luke (Luke 3:23-38 above) and Matthew (Matthew 1:2-16) that make it difficult to reconcile them in every detail. Two considerations should be noted to put their differences in perspective.
(1) Matthew traces Jesus' lineages forward to Abraham, the forefather of Israel (Matthew 1:2), while Luke traces His ancestry backward to Adam, the father of humanity (Luke 3:38 above). Thus while Matthew is stressing the Kingship of Jesus over Israel, Luke is stressing His qualifications to be the Savior of mankind as a whole.
(2) The two genealogies are substantially the same from Abraham to David, but diverge significantly in the generations that span from David to Jesus. It is quite possible (This is what I, personally, believe accounts for these differences because it would make sense that both Jesus' mother and legal father would both come from the line of David.) In this case, Matthew gives us the dynastic line that passes from David to Joseph through King Solomon (see Matthew 1:6), and Luke gives us the Davidic line more generally as it passes from David to Mary through Nathan (Luke 3:31 above). As with His Infancy Narratives, Luke may have obtained information about Jesus' family traditions from Mary herself (which is my own personal belief, partly due to the following information).
Luke 2:19: ("NRSV") But Mary treasured all these words and pondered them in her heart.
Mary . . . In Her Heart: Mary contemplates Jesus' birth and childhood, not from a distance, but as a participant in the mystery (Luke 1:35; Luke 1:43; and, Luke 2:51).
Luke 1:35: ("NRSV") The angel said to her, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the Child to be born (Other ancient authorities add of you) will be holy; He will be called the Son of God.
Luke 1:43: ("NRSV") And why has this happened to me, that the mother of my Lord comes to me?
Luke 2:51: ("NRSV") Then He went down with them and came to Nazareth, and was obedient to them. His mother treasured all these things in her heart.
Luke's insight suggests that Mary is either the direct or the indirect source of his information, since she alone could relate these hidden details of the story.
